1. What is the Marquee Moon Mailing List?
The Marquee Moon Mailing List is an unmoderated, public mailing list dedicated to discussions about the
recordings and career of Television, as well as the solo activities of its individual members.
Subscription is a two-step
process.
To begin, e-mail Majordomo@obbard.com
with a message body of "subscribe tv" for the standard
list or "subscribe tv-digest" for the Digest version. Alternately, you may choose to use the HTML interface available at this page.
The following will then occur:
1.
You will receive an e-mail with
the subject "Majordomo results" This simply confirms that
your subscription request has been received.
2.
You will receive an e-mail with
the subject "Confirmation for subscribe tv". This e-mail
will contain a key; it will look like:
auth 1ed1ed76 subscribe tv "Doe, Jane"
3. Copy this key and include it in the body of a
new e-mail to Majordomo@obbard.com. You
cannot include any extra characters or header material in your
e-mail - only include this key.
4. You
should receive an e-mail confirming your subscription to the list and
an introductory message shortly thereafter. Congratulations! You are now subscribed to the Marquee Moon Mailing List.
If you encounter problems subscribing, please e-mail the list administrator who can manually add you to the
subscriber list if necessary.
B. How do I unsubscribe?
To unsubscribe, e-mail Majordomo@obbard.com
with a message body of "unsubscribe tv" for the standard
list or "unsubscribe tv-digest" for the Digest version.
If you encounter problems unsubscribing, please e-mail the list administrator who
can manually remove you from the subscriber list if necessary.
C. Who maintains the list?
2. What is the Marquee Moon Mailing List intended for?
The Marquee Moon Mailing List is intended for discussions related to the recordings
and career of Television, as well as the solo activities of it individual members (Tom Verlaine, Richard Lloyd,
Fred Smith, Billy Ficca, and Richard Hell).
A. What topics may be discussed on the list?
The list is pretty much a free-for-all. Obviously, any and all news about members
of Television is welcome, especially release dates and concert information. Reviews and opinions are also encouraged.
Likewise, Television-related information is also acceptable (e.g., Patti Smith reviews, Luna tour dates). These are just
examples, not guidelines; anything not specifically prohibited below is allowed.
B. What topics may not be discussed on the list?
Outside commercial postings are strictly prohibited; any advertisements, chain e-mail, or any other type of bulk mail sent to the
list will result in the sender's immediate removal.
Personal attacks on list members or the unauthorized use of another subscriber's personal information are also strictly prohibited. Please notify the Marquee Moon Mailing List administrator of any off-list attacks on any list member for any reason other than musical taste.
Finally, please note that this is an unmoderated list; once sent, messages cannot be 'withdrawn'. In other words, proof-read everything before hitting 'send'!
C. I want to trade tapes/CD-Rs. Is that OK?
3. What is the difference between the 'TV' and the 'TV-digest' lists?
The 'TV' list is a standard listserv. This
means that every message sent to the listserv by a member gets
distributed to every other member of the list shortly after being
sent. A digest, on the other hand, is only sent when messages totaling roughly 500 lines have been received. The digest is generally
preferable for people who do not wish to potentially receive
numerous e-mails from the list during the day but rather wish to receive a single, longer
e-mail once every day or so.
4. Mailing List 'Technical' Etiquette
A. Attachments, or, "I have this great 4 megabyte WAV file of me playing 'Yonki Time' on the trombone. Can I send it to the list?"
Do not send attachments of any kind to the list. Attachments can clog
inboxes or even prevent list members from receiving any other non-list e-mail.
Most Internet Service Providers (ISPs) have strict rules about the size of incoming
messages. An attachment of even 200k can bounce from someone's inbox. Also,
attachments can take a while to download, depending on your Internet connection;
forcing every list member to download your file by attaching it to your message
isn't considerate. A better solution it to post the file to a Web site or FTP site
where it is accessible to everyone, and then posting the Web/FTP site address (e.g., "http://www.myserver.com/MyFiles/yonkitime.wav") to the mailing list.
B. HTML e-mail, or, "My e-mail program lets me add all this cool formatting to my messages! Isn't this great?"
Many newer e-mail programs allow 'formatted' e-mail to be created (including
Microsoft Outlook and Outlook Express, Netscape Messenger, AOL, and Eudora) using HTML.
This allows the author (you) to use formatting functions like bold or italics
in e-mail messages. Unfortunately, unless the recipient of the message also can
read HTML e-mail, they'll just see loads of garbage around your message (occasionally
obscuring your message) without the formatting. Out of courtesy to other list members, it's a good idea
not to use HTML formatting on your e-mail messages, and to turn off the
feature completely if possible.
5. Where can I find the list archives?
Archives for the list from December 1999 onwards can be found at this site. This archive is searchable. Archives covering the period between November 1998 and December 1999 used to be found at http://marqueemoon.listbot.com but have unfortunately disappeared!
6. Privacy issues
A. Will my e-mail address be given to any outside party?
No. The complete list of Marquee Moon subscribers will be kept private by the Marquee Moon Mailing List administrator. It will not be made available to any individual list members, nor will the list administrator divulge its contents publicly. It will also not be made available to any commercial or non-profit organization. Please contact the list administrator with any further questions.
B. Is Tom Verlaine / Richard Hell / Fred Smith / Debbie Harry / Don Henley / Aretha Franklin / etc. on this list? Can you give me their e-mail addresses?
7. NOTES & DISCLAIMERS
The list maintainer (see section 1C) holds final say over any dispute regarding the
use or misuse of the Marquee Moon Mailing List. The Marquee Moon Mailing List is not a moderated
list. Comments posted to the list reflect the opinions of the original sender, not of Obbard.com, Brainiac.com,
